Agree with that.
I've mentioned the Denman, Kauto Star, Long Run Gold.

Baeed reminds me of Frankel. Beating a load of shit over a mile when we now know he could have campaigned over I mile 2 and 1 mile 4. Too late now.

He will probably get horse of the year. But most people in the racing game will remember Alphanista with more affection.

I can understand the British bias, but what I cannot fathom is the disregard for the best race I've witnessed live.
2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Denman v Kauto Star.
There was an almost uncomfortable tension in the air before the race. I never experienced anything like it before a sporting event.
Then it delivered in spades.

For what it's worth I used think Frankel was the most over-rated horse of all time. His 1mile form is worth fuck all.
However, now I think that he was a 1m4f horse (with a probable preference for soft ground) that was just far too classy for inferior horses over 1m on ground he didn't particularly like.
I think he'd have done amazing stuff over 1m2f/1m4f on good/soft-hvy going.

Indian Skimmer in the Prix de Diane has always been my favourite. Smashing Miesque like this was quality to be honest, though it may have stretched Miesque.

1975 KG 6th & QE Stakes

Grundy v Bustino

Eddery v Joe Mercer

In a book entitled "My Greatest Race" - Mercer chose this even though he finished 2nd.

Says it all really.

Incidentally - pretty much finished both horses.

The 1972 Derby was a cracker with Roberto (Piggott on board) and Rheingold.

Roberto winning by a short head.

sold, ok yeah agree with what you said but another reason why Nijinsky shouldn't have been entered for the Arc was that he was recovering from Ringworm and he'd lost some weight but when all was said and done he still only lost by a head to Sassafras

For me I love it when the Fillies take on the boys... Pebbles, Dawn Run, Black caviar, Enable, Treve, Estimate... but the one that really got under my skin was a front running Yank horse called Rachel Alexandra... bravest horse I have ever seen... an absolute street brawling warrior..

Cough... yeah you don't normally win one or the other... very rare a horse would a. do both or b. even be considered good enough to do both... Triple Crown is Hugely massive in the US it is seen as teh greatest achievemnet a TB can do is to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont triple... over here not so much emphasis on the Guineas, Derby and St Leger... remember about 8 or 9 years ago the Coolmore lot tried it with Camelot (IIRC??) and he came up short... when Sea the Stars had the first 2 in the bag there was chat of Triple Crown OR the Arc... obv' he went Arc... the rest is history...

For pure excitement (especially if you had a bet on her)... Zenyatta made your hairs stand up... she was 19 out of 19 including taking on the boys a lot until she narrowly missed out on a second Breeders Cup Classic... her running style was always from last to first and weave her way through... I used to watch her from behind the sofa !!

I'm a huge fan of Nijinsky and the Long Fellow so what are the panel's views on the owner insisting he be entered for the Arc, knowing he just previously run the St Ledger?

And where can I try it?

Other notable head to heads,

Denman running Kauto Star into the ground when winning the 2008 Gold Cup.

Also, the Long Run, Denman. Kauto Star Gold Cup.

Cyrname lowering Altior's colours. Though it finished off both horses.

Native River grinding down Might Bite in the Gold Cup.

The 70s had some top Champion Hurdle races. Never seemed to dodge each other.

Monksfield. Sea Pigeon, Night Nurse, Comedy of Errors, Bula, Lanzarote.

*Oh and wasn't Lester Piggott the greatest jockey of all time?*

IMHO the greatest jockey would have to one that goes over the Jumps, so step forward Sir Anthony Peter McCoy

A yes from me as DB is my favourite ever racehorse. As Sold says Sea the Stars was also something special.
